The recent news about Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade is a heartbreaking reminder of the realities of depression and anxiety. More that 45,000 suicides occurred in the US in 2016-more than twice the number of homicides-making it the 10th leading cause of death. Among people ages 15-34, suicide is the second-leading cause of death. A big percentage of these cases weren’t diagnosed, which could mean they were not getting the help they need.
For many, providing help and support to others may come easy, but in a culture of scarcity and perfectionism, there can still be so much shame around reaching out for ourselves. Let’s break the stigma.
