Five Ways to Stay Consistent with Running

Run streak Day 995:

Squeezed in my mile run between kids drop off and clients and got it done!

Only 5 days left until I reach the incredible milestone of 1000 consecutive days of running at least one mile a day, outside!

Can you believe it? I can’t… Running has been my faithful companion through thick and thin, helping me not only maintain physical fitness but also providing much-needed mental clarity and stress relief. It’s incredible how this simple act of putting one foot in front of the other has transformed my life.

There were days when I felt tired or unmotivated, but I pushed through those barriers and reminded myself of the bigger picture. Staying committed to this run streak has taught me the power of consistency and discipline, both on and off the track. It’s a reminder that greatness is achieved one step at a time.

As I approach the 1000-day mark, I can’t help but reflect on the obstacles I’ve overcome along the way. From challenging weather conditions to busy schedules, from muscle soreness to mental fatigue, I’ve experienced it all. But every time I laced up my running shoes and hit the pavement, I proved to myself that I am capable of so much more than I ever imagined.

Now, I want to encourage each and every one of you to set your own goals and embrace your own personal challenges. Whether it’s running, walking, or pursuing any other form of exercise, find something that brings you joy and pushes you outside of your comfort zone. Start small, stay consistent, and watch as your own incredible journey unfolds.

With that said, here are some simple tips on staying consistent:

5 Effective Tips to Stay Consistent with Your Running Routine

Running is not just a physical activity; it is a journey of self-discovery and endurance. It can empower you, boost your confidence, and improve your overall well-being. However, sticking to a consistent running routine can be challenging, especially when life gets busy or motivation wanes. Here are five effective tips to help you stay consistent with your running and make it an integral part of your life.

1. Have a clear and solid intention.

Setting your intention by answering these questions:

  1. Why are you choosing to run:

  2. What value does it fulfill.

  3. Is it aligned with your goals that you are trying to meet?

  4. How often do you want to run

Write it down, on a journal on your phone:  Post it where you can see it when you wake up in the morning.

2. Start calling yourself a runner:

Instead of saying I like running, say I’m a runner. this shift often implies a degree of permanence or stability.

This is the type of person that you are.

For example:  When you ask your kids~

“Can you help with the dishes - say -

Can you be a helper and do the dishes?  This will get a different response from your child.

There is power in words and when you can own something that is part of who you are, it gives you a sense of confidence and that extra push to get you feeling motivated to get out there.

Now doing the dishes is not just a chore, but an opportunity.

3. Create Your Schedule:

Consistency thrives on structure. Set aside specific days and times for your running sessions and treat them as non-negotiable appointments with yourself. Prioritize your running time and protect it from other commitments. Creating a schedule will eliminate decision fatigue and make it easier to follow through. Remember, every run counts, even if it's just a short one. Be flexible, but also hold yourself accountable to your planned sessions.

4. Find an Accountability Buddy:

Having a running buddy can significantly enhance your motivation and commitment. Find a friend, colleague, or family member who shares your passion for running or is interested in starting. Schedule runs together, encourage each other, and hold each other accountable. It's amazing how having someone to share your journey with can make the experience more enjoyable and help you stay on track when things get tough.

5. Embrace Variety:

One of the keys to staying consistent with running is to keep it fresh and exciting. Mix up your routes, try different terrains, explore new trails, or incorporate interval training. Variety not only keeps boredom at bay but also challenges your body and mind in unique ways. Consider joining a local running group or participating in virtual races to connect with like-minded runners and add an element of friendly competition to your routine.

Taking care of your body and mind is essential for maintaining consistency in your running routine. Prioritize rest days to allow your body to recover and prevent burnout or injuries. Incorporate cross-training activities like yoga, strength training, or swimming to improve overall fitness and prevent monotony. Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing to reduce stress and enhance focus. Remember, self-care is not indulgent; it's a necessary component of a sustainable running journey.

By setting realistic goals, creating a schedule, finding an accountability buddy, embracing variety, and having a meaningful purpose on why you have this goal; you can overcome the obstacles that come your way and stay on track toward achieving your running aspirations. Remember, every step you take is a step closer to a healthier, stronger, and more empowered version of yourself.

Lace-up those running shoes, embrace the challenge, and let the magic of consistency unfold in your life.
