Hula and Finding Harmony in a Busy World

Hula is a magical and transformational form of self care.

In our fast-paced, hectic world, finding time for the activities we love can sometimes feel like an impossible task. But it is crucial to prioritize activities that contribute to the wellness of our mind, body, and soul. One of these activities for me is hula dancing. It is not just a hobby; it is a treasured time for me that allows me to recharge and find harmony in the midst of life's demands.

Throughout years of dancing; Tahitian and Hula; the Halau (dance studio) have become family. It has been my anchor throughout the hectic times of college years, navigating career changes in adulthood, making crucial life decisions, to starting a family. It has been my solace and the source of my strength, always there to keep me afloat during life's most trying moments. Still is to this day. When I’ve had a stressful day at work, and I’m frustrated, overwhelmed, and tired, dancing would be my relief from it all.

Stepping into the halau and immersing myself in my hula; led by our Kumu Hula Katrina Hali'imaile deJesus, (the Master teacher in the art of Hula), daughter of Kumu Hula Nalua Manaois, the founder of Hula Halau O’ Nalua; something remarkable takes place within me. The never-ending to-do list, the overwhelming influx of emails,  projects and meetings, all the worries that clutter my mind, all fade away into the background, leaving me with only the focus on the movements of my body, with the rhythm of the music. In those moments, the outside world ceases to exist, and I am guided by a different form of energy that shifts the functioning of my consciousness. The societal ways of defining who I am, falls apart- and I am who I am. Present.

Hula dancing taps into the natural energy that swirls within our bodies. It becomes a conduit for the messages from our subconscious, expressed through the graceful movements of our feet, hips, and the placement of our hands. It is storytelling in the most natural forms through the expressive gestures and gaze of our eyes, it conveys the emotions and narratives that lie within us.

Taking a break from the busyness of life and indulging in something we truly enjoy has positive effects on our overall well-being. It rejuvenates our mind and body, allowing us to approach our work with renewed energy and focus. The time spent dancing becomes a sanctuary, a moment of respite from the daily grind that helps me navigate life's challenges with a clear and centered mind.

Remember…

Engaging in activities we love is not just a luxury; and creating time for what we we love is not selfish; it is an act of self-love and self-preservation. It is a necessity for our holistic well-being. It reminds us that we are more than the sum of our responsibilities and obligations. It reconnects us with our passions, our creativity, and our true selves.

I invite you to find your own version of hula dancing. Discover the activities that bring you pure bliss and allow yourself to indulge in them. Whether it's painting, hiking, cooking, or playing an instrument, these moments of self-care will enable you to show up fully in your personal and professional lives and spreading positivity.

Let's dance through life, finding balance, joy, and fulfillment in every step.

Make it stand out
