“What I Learned From Being Immersed in the World of a Kung-Fu Warrior”

Immersed in the World of Kung Fu:

Here I am, at the gates of one of the thousands of Kung-Fu school boarding schools in China. The air is thick with centuries-old traditions as I make my way to the first out of the three distinct schools near the Shaolin Temple we will visit. This isn't your run-of-the-mill visit; it's a hands-on exploration into the discipline, skill, and camaraderie that define these martial arts sanctuaries.

Gifts:

In my hands, I carry Ghirardelli chocolates, Jelly Belly Candies, toys, and other gifts I brought from the US to bridge the gap between worlds. Presenting these gifts to the children is a symbol of connection, an encouragement and appreciation of their relentless pursuit of Kung Fu mastery.

Spectacle of Skills :

Anticipation fills the air as I witness the students' amazing display of Kung Fu skills. From the youngest trainees to the seasoned practitioners, each movement is disciplined so intricately into perfection. The present moment is alive with the energy of their performances.

A Glimpse into Daily Life:

As I explore the daily routines of these young martial artists, I become a silent observer of their lives. From shared living spaces to the structured schedule guiding their days, every detail contributes to order and community. It's a journey into their world unfolding before me.

Emotional Reflections:

As a mother and a mental health therapist, I'm struck by a mix of emotions.  I ponder, questioning whether they receive the essential nurture required for human growth and whether they experience the warmth of love. Simultaneously, the realization that children as young as two embark on this path, my thoughts drift to their mothers, imagining how challenging it must be for them to be separated from their children.

Yet, even without the nurture from their caregivers, what they do have is the camaraderie among the other students that shines through—a powerful reminder of the strength found in the support of a community that becomes your family.
